Napoleon - In the Name of Art plot

Was Napoleon Bonaparte one of the most influential people of the past two hundred years? The makers of “Napoleon - In the Name of Art” seem convinced of that. Not so much because of his military victories or how he conquered Europe, but because of his relationship to art. A range of historians, musicologists, art historians and writers from Italy, Egypt, France and England will be present for this.

Writers Didi Gnocchi and Matteo Moneta do not forget the fact that Napoleon was responsible for hundreds of thousands of deaths and robbed the cities he conquered of their art, but they treat it as necessary aside as much as possible in this hymn to Napoleon. In a messy way, anecdotes from Napoleon's life alternate with discussions of the most important works of art that he managed to 'collect' and 'preserve' for posterity. The Louvre would not be the Louvre without Napoleon, but it goes too far to portray Napoleon as a protégé of the arts, especially since he frequently used them for propaganda purposes. Gnocchi and Moneta even dare to claim that Napoleon lost the Battle of Waterloo 'because he didn't feel like it anymore'. Regardless of your opinion of Napoleon, this is a chaotic and superficial documentary. And why so much importance is attached to the first performance of a Te Deum especially for Napoleon's coronation as King of Italy is a mystery to me. I'm not a 'classical music' connoisseur, but the result (performed live during the credits) doesn't make much of an impression. Neither does Jeremy Iron's mannered presentations.
