Prague-born composer Josef Mysliveček [Vojtech Dyk] was 43 when he died in Rome in 1881 with his latest score clutched tightly in his hands. Josef is in financial ruin and his face is badly disfigured. How did it get to this point? We discover this in a number of episodes beginning in 1865, when Josef travels to Venice in the hope of finding a mentor and a lucrative assignment. Women fall head over heels for the colorless Josef, and that is one of the reasons why he quickly manages to find an entry point for a wonderful assignment that will make him a celebrated composer and conductor. Unfortunately, composers don't get paid nearly as much as performing artists, and Josef wastes his money on prostitutes and gambling. Dyk has no charisma at all and Václav does not provide any insight into the positive and negative motivations of the main character. However, opera lovers will thoroughly enjoy the impressive musical performances, although I regretted that they were not provided with subtitles, especially because I have the impression that the lyrics are a reflection of the inner life of the main character. Other plus points are the costumes by Andrea Cavelletto, the camera work by Diego Romero and the attention to opera culture, which has changed considerably since then.
