Stromboli plot
Sara arrives on the island of Stromboli with a suitcase full of vodka and an exhausted heart. She ends up on a retreat. Together with a motley crew of other wandering souls led by the charismatic guru Jens, Sara confronts the demons of her past.

With both her marriage and relationship with her 14-year-old daughter [Anna Leffen] ruined, Sara [Elise Schaap] sheds all trepidation while staying on Stromboli, a volcanic island where she was once happy. At the end of a disastrous evening, the drunken Sara ends up in the residence of a kind of therapy group led by the enigmatic Jens [Christian Hillborg] and Thandi [Neerja Naik]. Partly due to the presence of Harold [Tim McInnerny], a British millionaire whom she met the day before, and an attractive breakfast buffet, she is tempted to join in the activities and is forced to face her past. The screenplay, based on a novel by Saskia Noort, does not overflow with originality, but Schaap lends dignity and credibility to her character who, despite her impulsive and sometimes unpleasant behavior, always manages to keep the viewer's sympathy thanks to her. Hillborg is a bit too much, but the rest of the supporting cast is fine and Van Erp has some interesting visual ideas, especially during the denouement. Rifka Lodeizen, Olga Zuiderhoek, Bert Hana and Kees Hult appear briefly in flashbacks.

Nice film about a woman who goes on holiday to an Italian island on her own. The first part is the best where the drunken acting Elise Schaap goes well. The group therapy sessions are somewhat clichéd, but otherwise work normally (the memories are also well edited in between). Just not 3.5 stars.

Elise Schaap is quite a good actress, she shows that in that scene where she relives her rape. Unfortunately, she too often opts for some slapstick in the beginning and that fits much less. A pity, because the film is quite okay (visually fine, good pace, flashbacks strongly processed) and certainly fine in terms of content. I am somewhat familiar with such training and processes and they are portrayed very nicely in the film. For the viewer the cover of Schaap goes too fast, but I've seen more people who also (at least) look at the world completely differently after an intensive weekend. Although that is never really made palpable in 85 minutes of film. 3.0*.
