"Hari Ini atau Tidak Sama Sekali!"
Maguwo, Jogjakarta, 1947. Seven young men are cadets and technicians of the Indonesian Air Force. Only two years after Indonesia's independence, the Netherlands invades again. To fight back, Mul, Adji, Sigit, Har, Tardjo, Kaput and Dul decide to attack the Dutch army headquarters from the air. However, the young men are not yet proficient with airplanes. Will they succeed in proving that they can fly and return home safely?

Nice.
It's refreshing, in any case, to see the story of Indonesian independence through an Indonesian lens. A bit of a counter to the perpetual Dutch sense of superiority and the often seriously one-sided narrative we hear here. It's also clear that on the Indonesian side, the feelings run at least as deep as they do here—not just that the film was made, but also how. Because, to give just one example, if you look at the budget, we're actually talking about an amount that wouldn't even cover the catering costs of a decent production. A nice parallel with the story, in that respect—the cadets' enthusiasm is mirrored in the enthusiasm of the entire production.
So is it all good? No, really not. The effects are abysmal, to name just one example. They shouldn't have pulled down the control tower, for example; it's just too clumsy. But the airplane shelter is an example of how you can create a pretty clever scene with some bamboo and a bucket of gasoline.
And the story, well, it really did happen. How much it's embellished with the romantic subplot, I can't quite figure out right now—the historical record is somewhat sparse and perhaps not entirely untainted by the heroic status the story holds in Indonesia. A somewhat laborious glance at Indonesian Wikipedia reveals, however, that the actual story was somewhat more complex and less boyish. Which isn't really surprising, I think.
What I already started with, especially nice to get a different perspective on the whole thing.

The story of the 1947 Dutch struggle against Indonesia, which had just declared independence, told through the eyes of several wartime heroes. The survivors later became prominent politicians. While the story is valuable, Mandra and Swastia prefer superficial hero worship to a realistic reconstruction of events. The actors do their best, but are also let down by a lack of budget, meaning the battlefield and aerial scenes are largely unimpressive.
