Dark Nature

This movie wasn't exciting at all and sadly overall pretty soporific.

The story was still interesting. The film has a few minor similarities with The Descent, only it was much more fun and exciting.

Unfortunately, this film has a lot of repetition of facets. One of the ladies hears something and then gets to process a nasty memory of her trauma. It starts when the group has entered the wilderness and lasts until 20 minutes before the end. Only then do we see the monster properly in focus for the first time and it looked okay.

Throughout the film I struggled to keep my attention, even towards the end, when it should be extra exciting. Fortunately, the landscapes from Canada made me somewhat happy.

All in all, a mediocre horror film that did not captivate me at all.

2 stars.

In Dark Nature the characters are confronted with the fears that have taken hold within them and that have a major influence on their behavior in daily life. It's always nice to be confronted in a film with a variety of hidden fears that are expressed in the story over the course of the film.
In this film that is guaranteed to happen when a group of anxious women go on a hike through a rugged mountain area. They will of course see things that are not there and see things that are there but that are not noticed by the other members of the group. Paranoia lurks and mutual rift is inevitable.
That scenario is exploited well in the first half of the film. The inner abysses find an outlet during the journey through the vast and unpopulated area. Things become less interesting when a real threatmanifests itself. From that moment on the film disappears into clichés. The shadowy and intriguing play with psychosis and trauma fades into the background. Fortunately, the atmosphere that is effectively built from the start and is constantly disturbing does not disappear. Thanks to the setting and the nice acting of the ladies' group.
Dark Nature has a strong first half and then lets things run. Dark Nature is mediocre.

"Boring" and "drawn out far too long" are apt descriptions to describe this unimpressive work by director Berkley Brady. Only the sporadic moments of atmosphere and reasonable layout save the whole thing from a lower grade. The cast members are by definition not doing a bad job, but the screenplay by Brady and Tim Cairo is completely colorless and unremarkable, which then strongly influences the interpretation of the characters. The uninteresting events and lengthy build-up ultimately lead to a finale that is equally colorless and unremarkable, which gives it an extra acidic effect that the opening was designed quite intensely. Brady would do better to be more focused on the genres and less on the additional drama elements, because Dark Nature is often impossible to get through.
