”Vive l'humanité!”

Captivating frame story about a Jewish girl who manages to escape the Holocaust in Alsace by going into hiding on the remote farm of a disabled classmate. A heart-warming war drama in which humanity contrasts sharply with fascist herd behavior.

A beautiful romantic/fairytale coming-of-age story. The concept of an older person telling their childhood story through long flashbacks isn't new, but it works perfectly here. The acting is top-notch, and it's a beautiful story: a mix of romance, fairytale, and the harsh reality of war. I could easily empathize with the young leads, and they managed to draw me into their world. The story—even the rawer aspects—is told as a 15-year-old might experience it. It's stripped of the harsh realism you see in many other war films. Moreover, it's a film adaptation of the grandmother's story. She tells it to her grandson, Julian, for a reason. This also explains why the film chooses to emphasize the relationship between Sara and Julian.

A striking detail: grandson Julian is the same Julian as in the film Wonder (Film). In that film, Julian is one of Auggie's bullies and is expelled. In White Bird, he struggles to find his place at the new school and meets his grandmother, who shares her story, touching Julian and making him think differently about life and his role in it. You certainly don't need to have seen Wonder to appreciate this film (it's really only a small detail, and a photo of Auggie pops up briefly that caught my attention), but Wonder is definitely worth watching (4 stars for me as well). And if you do, I'd recommend watching them in chronological order (so, Wonder first). Anyway, this one also gets 4 stars for me.
