Incantation is a typical modern found footage film. The attempt is fun and creepy at times, but it makes so many mistakes that it just starts to annoy me. The whole idea of the found footage is undermined when the camera still rotates by itself and zooms in on an image while the protagonist had placed the camera, suddenly the character is filmed from different angles while there is no second camera in the picture at that moment. game, crawling through creepy tunnels and the camera continuously changes perspective. One time from the front, then pointing backwards.

Things like this bother me and more contemporary movies in this genre (that lousy Paranormal Activity sequel) are guilty of this. What's the point of this way of filming if you just can't follow the rules and make it look credible? There must also be a reason to have that camera in your hands and that is no longer necessary at some point or in certain situations.

It sounds easy to make that kind of movie. But it requires a lot of skill and creativity to actually get it on film properly and effectively.

I just don't believe it here.

Meh.

Horror film that actually refuses to choose a specific angle. Kevin Ko probably saw opportunities in the fact that Taiwan was somewhat behind in terms of cinema. Then there is almost a world open to you as a director, only despite all the popularity that the film acquired, I think it's just weak coffee for breakfast.

Certainly the chaos of the film is somewhat counterproductive. From the start, Ko throws everything at you to cram the film as full as possible, but then never connects the dots properly. This way you get to see a lot, but it doesn't follow each other well at all. The film thus creates a bit of a hanging feeling, giving the impression that it never ends.

In addition, there is just a general lack of rest. Somewhere under all these layers is a pretty cool horror movie hidden and Ko knows where to go when it comes to decoration. Getting it right is another story. The sometimes lurid atmosphere has advantages, but due to the rather hectic production that never really takes the chance to portray everything in a clear and exciting way, it is hardly really impressive.

I get what they went for and it makes an enthusiastic impression, but Ko clearly has a lot to learn. The film never seems to hang in its own culture, but mainly in that of larger productions, and therefore the film also lacks some idiosyncrasy. For what it is it has a heart and nice ideas, but that's about it.

Cursed to Boredom

Incantation is yet another overhyped horror that fails to live up to the high expectations. The much too amateurish pieced together story managed to fascinate me at the introduction, but soon I wondered why I was still looking through at all. Maybe because I read somewhere that the lock would have been strong? Unfortunately, I couldn't find myself in this either.

The biggest clinchers for me were that the scares were presented way too amateurish. Many moments that were supposed to be unnerving felt rather cheap to me, and the more the movie showed, the worse this got. And if you decide to apply digital effects, try to do this with a budget higher than 500 euros

In addition, the playing time felt way too long and could have easily done 20 minutes. It also happens way too often, way too little and this only drags Incantation even more. Finally, the found footage design has potential, but the director does not do enough with it. A number of trippy images add little to this. Which was a shame, because they were pretty much the only moments that managed to grab my attention for a short time.
