Alle Reden übers Wetter plot

Clara made it happen: she moved away from her native region in East Germany, now leads an independent life in Berlin and teaches philosophy while completing her PhD. Between her professional ambitions, an affair with one of her students and her demanding friendship with her thesis supervisor Margot, she hardly has time for her family. When Clara visits her mother for a weekend with her fifteen-year-old daughter Emma, she is confronted with her ideal of a free and self-determined life and the price she has to pay for it.

The title is a bit misleading because the weather is not discussed in this film. In the university environment in which the main character Clara finds herself, people only talk about the weather as an exponent of a discussion about the climate. Even in her private life, Clara is not surrounded by people with a great interest in the daily weather forecasts and there is little urge to talk about the weather.

Does this fact provide the film with a flood of interesting topics for discussion? Well no. Not really. The film hardly provides information. For that reason, while watching, more and more questions arise that are not answered. A striking example of such a question concerns Clara's origins and the masquerade surrounding it. Clara comes from a farming hamlet in the former East Germany. She hides that background from the wealthy elite colleagues at the university and is completely absorbed in the same haughty manner. Why Clara, who appears stiff but not necessarily insecure, does this very consistently is one of the pressing questions I kept asking myself. I got the impression that something more than pure shame was going on. But what that could be?

The film rarely becomes concrete. Much remains tied to assumptions. In emptiness. When Clara goes to her parental home for a weekend, she eagerly flirts with the vague intellectual exotica she acquired as a PhD student in the big city. Intellectual baggage with which she hopes to impress the simple citizens. You would say that director and writer Annika Pinskes is working towards some kind of psychological conflict. Or want to thematize something like displacement. I'm just guessing. After all, it will not be concrete. Sometimes while watching I desperately wished they were talking about the weather. That is absolutely not interesting, but at least it is concrete and does not feel so empty.
