Estación Catorce plot

Not a single train stops at Estación Catorce, in San Luis Potosí, Mexico, although freight trains rumble by daily on the railway that cuts the village in two. In addition, there is little activity in the village. The population there mainly lives in poverty, has hardly any work and it is difficult to make ends meet. Little Luis, 7 years old, lives there with his parents, brothers, sister and grandmother. Luis regularly has to flee the school and take shelter at home when a column of vehicles from a drug cartel stops in the village to cause death and destruction. But when the criminals have disappeared again, his father Manuel sees his chance one day and takes Luis with him to take a piece of cake while looting a house of a wealthy murdered couple. He asks Luis to help him drag a large pink sofa home so he can sell it later for a handsome amount.

A strong first part of the film, but I had seen it after an hour. Fortunately, twenty minutes later it was also over (83 minutes to be exact). I don't mean this disrespectfully, because all in all I certainly enjoyed the film, but expectations were no longer met after a great start.

It misses the movie on a clear target. No idea where the director wanted to go with her story. She therefore does not yet have to work explanatory about the who and why, but now there was not enough consistency. Possibly the opening scene was used to frame the context and setting and then the focus was shifted to a kind of coming of age story of little Luis.

Furthermore, a nice setting of a cut-off poor pueblo where little future can be gathered. Live and survive. The crime of one or another gang is used as an advantage to collect that little bit extra.

The film starts off strong. School children have to go home, because there is danger. Once home, his parents barricade their shabby house, while the viewer hears the violent noise of violence and gunshots through the audio tape.

It turns out to be the beginning of a beautiful, small film that shows the life of a family in a poor village in an almost documentary way, in which the mother toils in the household and the father makes ends meet in mining and petty theft. For Luis, his father is his great example, but gradually the cloak of innocence falls off him.
