Director Al Rashidi manages to portray the characters well in terms of variety, but since they all wear diving suits, after a while I as a viewer could no longer tell them apart. It takes almost 45 minutes before they actually pierce the surface of the water, before a long prologue is presented in which each character has to deal with his or her own problems. It's not very interesting, but it is genuinely more infectious than the limited shark attacks and de-escalating underwater adventures. There are some fairly tense moments left and right, but Al Rashidi interrupts the threat too often for some sentimental situation. The whole thing, despite short highlights, is almost impossible to get through. When at one point I thought an hour had passed, it turned out that only 20 minutes had passed. Mako is really a typical film that doesn't seem to move on despite a relatively limited running time, and if the screen fill in terms of exciting scenes is directed so limited, the whole thing simply becomes tiring too quickly.
