New Pigs on the Block plot

In the documentary New Pigs on the Block, filmmaker Jimmy Kets focuses the camera on 3 pigs: Luc, Mia & Anja. They play the leading role in a social neighborhood project. On a piece of no man's land demarcated by electric wire, between a railway and a small parking lot, the pigs process the food surplus from restaurants and shops in the neighborhood. A noble design. The film therefore starts in an apparently earthly paradise, where they can eat as they please and where they receive warmth and friendship from the local residents. But slowly it turns. The outside world is increasingly disrupting their peaceful existence. Summer is now turning into autumn, their place is falling into disrepair, the atmosphere between the pigs becomes more grim and their trust in humans ebbs away.

Kets filmed the pigs Luc, Mia and Anja during 2018, when they were part of an experiment in the Flemish town of Gentbrugge. On the edge of a residential area, on a piece of wasteland, they have their own den that is maintained by volunteers. To prevent food waste, local residents are allowed to feed the animals with their food leftovers. At first, everything is peaceful, but Kets realizes that pigs are social animals and cleverly uses editing to project human emotions onto Luc, Mia and Anja. As the seasons progress, unrest arises in the den – mainly due to human interference. Inevitably manipulative, but the denouement is unforgettable.
