Had echt het gevoel bij het zien van deze film, dat ik in de jaren 70 was. Op zich een leuke en interessante Nederlandse film om een keer gezien te hebben, met niet de standaard Nederlandse acteurs.

Voor mij: 3 *

Freely based on the life of Olga de Haas - and perhaps more than that an ode to her life.

But besides that also just a super beautiful film about real people, nicely played by real people who fit into that story and know how to bring it to life. An image of how it went back then - perhaps not literally and with some poetic license to color it more beautifully than it really was, as you also keep your most cherished memory in a more beautiful light. With very fine cinematography that shows the same more beautiful light, with the brilliant images of the view from the Schouwburg in the golden hour as a beautiful example, although the poster already gives away a lot of that.

But there's also a deeper layer, something more serious, the film is also about the difficult side of friendship, camaraderie, and how some people don't keep up, take their talent too seriously. How that can bother instead of helping, the dark side of a gift.

It's nice that the leading roles are played by ballerinas who act, instead of raking actresses - or at least that's how it appears to my untrained eye. Narratively perhaps a bit difficult to follow without knowledge of history, but if you get rid of that and follow the main line, it is just a very beautiful film, and above all just unusually good for a Dutch production.

Meijerink and Englebert are excellently cast as two ballerinas who become good friends despite their opposing personalities. Irma [Elaine Meijerink] is a punctual, disciplined ballerina and the favorite of her instructor [Katelijne Damen]. Olga [Roos Englebert] is definitely talented, but partly due to the pressure her father [Peter Paul Muller] puts on her, she takes dancing much less seriously. Irma and Olga make each other better, but the cutthroat competition in the ballet world puts a strain on their friendship. But can they do without each other? Roos Ouwehand's screenplay provides little insight into the causes of the neuroses of the main characters. The presence of Gijs Scholten van Aschat and Guido Pollemans in supporting roles, among others, distracts from the central plot and it is a bit melodramatic, but Meijerink and Englebert keep things on track with perfect interplay.
