"Welcome to the new west."

The hunt is on for a rare piece of clothing sacred to the indigenous Lakota people that has now ended up on the black market. The lives of the local villagers and outsiders are violently intertwined. While some treasure hunters are purely out for money, others hope to regain their individual freedom or simply return the shirt to its owners. One thing is certain: every person involved must know how to survive.

Mandy Starr [Halsey] leaves her abusive husband [Eric Dane] for dead and goes on the run. What preceded and what follows is revealed through a diverse cast of characters, including Mandy's son [Gavin Maddox Bergman], a notorious criminal [Eric Rex], a Native American representative [Zahn McClarnon], a socially awkward man [Paul Walter Hauser] looking for a life partner, and a waitress [Sydney Sweeney]. A cleverly constructed blend of Western, crime film, and comedy, full of surprising, entertaining twists. It premiered at the festival in 2023 but didn't hit theaters until two years later.

A mediocre film in which a stolen, valuable garment causes quite a bit of trouble. Due to the structure, the film lacks focus, and as a result, it takes a while before it becomes somewhat captivating. The second half is therefore the best, but by then it's already too late.

In Americana, various groups of people with different intentions converge. There are criminals, an unlikely duo, the girlfriend on the run, a peculiar family, and the Native Americans, led by a certain Ghost Eye. And finally, there's the girlfriend's son who believes he's a reincarnation of Sitting Bull. They all become involved in a fight over a shirt. Not just any shirt. A shirt used in Native American rituals, possessing great symbolic value, and, of course, worth a great deal of money.

That sounds chaotic, and it is. That sounds funny. And it is. Well, it certainly is a little funny. The film is divided into several chapters. Each chapter focuses on a different character or group of characters. Each chapter offers its own perspective on the events. There's no real chronological order to the events. The story frequently jumps back and forth in time before everything and everyone comes together in a grand showdown. The film's structure guarantees dynamism and makes for an enjoyable watch. One drawback, I found, was that the characters remained somewhat superficial as a result. I would have liked to know more about some of them. Just when I thought, "Hmm, interesting," the film would jump to another chapter and a different perspective.

The film is beautifully shot. Visually appealing. Beautiful shots. The acting is good. The characters are a bit overdrawn and often express themselves in cool one-liners. I like that. It's just hard to get immersed in the story. It's too jumpy for that. Too fragmented. Good ideas. Good storylines. However, the coherence leaves much to be desired. Somehow, things don't quite fit together. The film isn't a nice, rounded whole. In the end, I just accepted it and found Americana to be a decent film.
