The Chelsea Hotel in New York was a notorious breeding ground for artistic minds in the heyday of the American counterculture. A select group of now elderly tenants held out longer, even when the walls slowly started to crumble and a long-term renovation process became an absolute necessity. Dreaming Walls is a sobering and musing portrait of the artists who spend their last days in a dilapidated dream palace.

Setback. A documentary about an iconic hotel where, in addition to artists, many celebrities have lived. A few are mentioned and you only see them in photos. Often you also have to guess who it all is. You briefly see Patti Smith, and otherwise unknown and mainly rather uninteresting people. Hardly any history or background on the hotel itself. Some names of hotel owners are mentioned (which mean nothing to me as a viewer) and apparently one of those owners ensured that the place was renovated in such a way that residents had a smaller home for more money. You can see the entire documentary of the hotel in a state of renovation. Sawing and hammering in the background, with the cables from the ceiling, the cement bags on the floor and bare walls. There is talk of a room in the hotel that would still be in its original state from 1890. An incredibly beautiful room. Yes, you want to see that as a viewer, right? Unfortunately that will not happen. Instead you see the next uninteresting resident who is bummed that his wall is painted blue. Meh.

New York's Chelsea Hotel was completed in 1884 and was for a long time 'the place to be' for bon vivants from all over the world. This documentary follows a number of veterans who have lived here for decades and have to deal with a major renovation that takes years and is constantly delayed by complaining residents. The old residents reminisce about the greats who once stayed here and, despite the meager facilities (including an elevator), have no intention of being chased away. This would have been better expressed in a short format.
