Just before the liberation of Bergen-Belsen, three more transports of prisoners left the concentration camp. One of those trains came into Russian hands on April 23, 1945 near the village of Tröbitz. The Russians take the village and let the survivors of Bergen-Belsen take up residence there. Diesing tells the story from the perspective of three women: Simone [Hanna van Vliet] is the Jewish concentration camp survivor who, with her husband Isaac [Bram Suijker], is trying to gain enough strength before returning to Amsterdam; Vera [Eugénie Anselin], the Russian sergeant who tries to protect her men from (more) war crimes; and Winnie [Anna Bachmann], the teenager who grew up in Nazi Germany and whose family was dealt with harshly by the Russians. The basic idea is intriguing, but the scenario loses all credibility from the moment the surprisingly fit-looking Van Vliet appears on screen.

The end of the Second World War in mid-1945 created uncertain times, in which it came down to surviving while you didn't know who you could or couldn't trust. In these precarious circumstances, three completely different women are more or less condemned to each other because after the liberation they found shelter in the same house in a village in Germany occupied by the Soviets. This naturally entails tensions, but gradually the women begin to find each other. Saskia Diesing has made a fine drama about this underexposed shadow of the war. The film – inspired by true events – certainly has shortcomings, but nevertheless leaves the necessary impression.
