Richie Bravo is a kind of Austrian René le Blanc, certainly in terms of ego. Tinsel and rancidity go hand in hand in a faded schlager singer in an Italian seaside town where the past glory also radiates. Richie survives by sleeping with older women for a fee, by renting out his apartment to fans, and by gigging at retirement resorts. The sadness is dripping from it, but Richie is having fun and getting through it.

That will be what if his daughter also appears on the scene.

Fantastically acted, gloomy and at times also just witty drama, the only downside is that it could have been a bit shorter, but otherwise a very great film. No beautiful movie stars but the naked reality.

During the performance, an elderly couple (they were sitting diagonally in front of us) took off after a few significant mutual glances at certain scenes after more than half an hour. They apparently hadn't read what was waiting for them. Unintentionally they were part of the film experience, slowly stumbling down the stairs in the dark, man couldn't find the exit door, thought it was behind a curtain, woman saw the stool and they stumbled away.

I would have given anything to hear what they said to each other afterwards.

I had high hopes for this one, but the movie was very disappointing. In any case, this thing takes too long, after about 80 minutes the point is made and then the film goes on for a long time. Especially that scene with the two women in an abandoned hotel goes on and on. Just like the production because apparently the film was already shot in 2018.

The atmosphere is sometimes great, with run-down hotels and faded 80s glories that people have continued to live in there with the wrong glitter curtains and colored fluorescent lights. But that had been enough. And the director chooses to make everything even more sad with only gray days and lots of rain. That eventually became too much. Also in terms of plot, I think the film is only half developed and the acting is not very special. Thomas lacks the emotional depth his role needs and therefore remains very much on the surface. On that front, the elaboration of the character Ritchie Bravo, the film failed, just like his relationship with his daughter.

I also see things written about that Nazi father because of songs he sings (apparently, I didn't recognize them), but I doubt that. The man is demented, returns to his childhood because of it, also calls out for his mother at the end. His wife was from '33, he himself will not have been much older. In short, the Nazi era was his childhood when such songs are sung in school. Purely because of his dementia, he ends up there again, without further reason.

No idea what Seidl means by this. Something like: the past is forgotten, the boomers only think of themselves and live in their old glory and the youth consists of immigrants and lazybones living on their parents? But that would probably be too simplistic. And I don't really care either. 2.0*.

I had already seen a few of Seidl's films and knew more or less what to expect. No voluptuous women with divine bodies, but judging by the fan base of the declining schlager singer Ritchie Bravo, the average age and fat layer is a bit higher. It delivers a raw and everyday story, without many twists and turns. Just the way life is.

The highlights of Ritchie Bravo are already behind us. The demons of booze and gambling are taking over and all is well to generate some extra cash. He thinks that's fine and is an extra penny that he enjoys and at the same time earns something from.

Only his expenses unexpectedly increase when his daughter comes up. Tragic and pitiful are those contacts without love. Tough and relentless. It draws the deep irreparable wounds between the two. The contacts with his demented father are also disconsolate and miserable. On the one hand he steals from his father to maintain his addictions, on the other hand there is that concern between him and his father.

It is difficult to create an image of Ritchie Bravo. A selfish manipulative bastard who deserves no better, but despite the many problems also a man who needs help. Well, that double.

Nice film about a folk singer whose musical career is not what it used to be. The main character is well portrayed and is interesting enough. However, it becomes quite monotonous and takes too long. The desolate setting (a deserted seaside resort in winter) fits the film perfectly. Some awkward scenes, but less penetrating than some of Ulrich Seidl's other films.
