Suzanne McBride has three daughters. The two eldest live in the same town and argue because the eldest, Hannah, is so busy with her career that she doesn't have time for the younger and her two daughters. The youngest, Beth, is a happily married stay-at-home mom who is growing tired of that role and feeling unsatisfied. The younger sister, Posy, lives in Alaska with her parents. She longs for travel and adventure, but feels obliged to take over their parents' cafe when they retire soon. They are about to meet to celebrate their mother's 60th birthday, which is also the 25th anniversary of a mysterious bad event.
