Hækkum Rána plot

In 2015, a girls' basketball team was founded in Iceland. The coach was experienced, unconditional and always raised the bar. The girls were trained as leaders off the field and as professional athletes on the field. Early on they set their sights high, they would always compete with the best team and with that ambition they won in both girls and boys tournaments. Until they were no longer allowed to compete with the boys. This is a story of 8-13 year old girls, who wanted to change the paradigm in women's basketball in Iceland. With great sacrifice, they took on the challenges they encountered.

Brynjar Karl Sigurðsson coached his first basketball team when he was 15 years old and gained a lot of knowledge in the US, where he worked with some of the sport's greats. The birth of his daughter Tanja taught him to see the world through the eyes of a girl and that turned out to be a crucial motivation when he started training her. At first in a playful manner, with simple exercises, but when more and more girls joined him, he took it seriously and set up a team. This documentary follows the team from the moment the girls are only 8 or 9 years old to the most important moment of their lives so far: the Scania Cup tournament in Sweden. A razor-sharp plea for gender equality in sports, at least for prepubescent children, in which we see the girls grow into resilient teenagers with strong perseverance and a will of their own. The many meetings with parents about the coach's rigorous working method - which the girls themselves defend very well - make it clear where the origins of gender inequality lie. Inspiring, fascinating, but keeps both feet on the ground.
