Nowhere plot

Former truck driver André fills his days with refurbishing a remote job cafe. His routine life is shaken when he catches homeless teenager Thierry attempting to break in. Strongly touched by his story, André takes him under his wing and they go in search of a trace of Thierry's family. During the road trip not only a special friendship grows, but also the realization that they need each other to put the past to rest.

A social drama that mainly revolves around the dejected André and the somewhat lost Thierry. Even though the idea is not that original and we think we have seen it before, Koen De Bouw and Noa Tambwe Kabati do click. Step by step the story penetrates and you really empathize with Thierry's story. André's story sometimes feels a bit forced as an obligatory counter-story in response to Thierry's. Although it is not too bad and it does contribute to the film. His problems are unfortunately a bit more recognizable, while we sometimes show less understanding for young people like Thierry. Because it's just so complex. But gradually you empathize with him completely.

Nowhere (with the wonderfully brilliant title at the credits NOW/HERE) is a small film that we see more often in Flanders, but that is very beautifully portrayed with two top actors and a story with a heart.

Despite the moderate visitor numbers, 2021 was all in all a strong year for Flemish drama film. You had Red Sandra by Jan Verheyen, but the grittier drama films still came from Rookie (Film, 2021), Cool Abdoul (Film, 2021) or Dealer (Film, 2021) . Although I placed them all at the same level, I found this new one from Monsaert to be the better of the above three, more intense and heavier. Although his oeuvre consists of only three films, I found this to be a typical Monsaert in which, just like Offline and Le ciel Flamand, he does not shy away from controversy and difficult themes.

Director Monsaert and actor Koen De Bouw received a star in the Walk of Fame at the premiere at the recent FF Oostende, rightly so in my opinion. Koen De Bouw plays a strong role here as a withdrawn man with quite a few scratches on his body. A role I had not yet seen De Bouw play. Previously, his oeuvre consisted more of (detective) thrillers or comically light-hearted characters/films/series. Discovery is also Noa Tambwe Kabati who I have not seen act before (I don't know wtFOCK).

Excellent camera work, often filming close to the skin. The locations are gray and the misery that both experience brings them closer together. In terms of editing, I found the film occasionally dropped a stitch, as if just a little too much had been deleted. The plot development is also not conclusive, but that does not alter the fact that Nowhere has become a melancholy engaging film.

Oh yeah, the movie title is pretty clever. Full and apart apply to the content of the movie.
