Yuni plot

The intelligent sixteen-year-old Yuni doesn't know yet what she wants to do after her last school year. What she does know is what she absolutely does not want: to become a teenage bride. Her teachers see a future for her at university, but her loving, traditional grandmother wants her to get married. When the stubborn young woman turns down not one but two men, the rumor mill starts spinning. After all, there is an Indonesian myth that says that a woman who rejects two proposals will never marry. Yuni becomes frustrated with the limited path she must walk as a woman and demands a better future.

Kirana stars as Yuni, an intelligent Indonesian teenager with a desire for freedom and an obsession with all things purple. Her mentor [Dima Aditya] believes that Yuni can have a bright academic future, but Yuni's dreams seem to fall apart when she threatens to be married off (as a 2nd wife too) to the much older Iman [Muhammad Khan]. The scenes with Yuni and her friends are especially impressive, thanks to Andini's excellent direction of the young cast.

A strong coming of age of a teenage girl in Islamic Indonesia. Arranged marriage is still the norm and is considered an honor. Only Yuni sees things completely differently. She wants to continue her studies. Not that her parents don't want to offer her that opportunity, but she will have to rely on a scholarship to pay her costs.

She is very beautiful and can no longer keep up with the marriage proposals. It still has a strong impact on her self-confidence. She discovers her sexualization and feels trapped between traditions and her own future. Not necessarily a heavy film, all in all quite light, although the themes are certainly palpable. Hence the label that this film is suitable for everyone. Ideal for a school performance for 14-16 year olds.

A film that does little wrong for its target audience. Cultural and religious facets are also touched upon. As a whole you see Yuni as an intelligent woman who dreams of her own future and with the same (sexual) feelings as Western teenage girls. Only she was born elsewhere.
