July 17, 2014, Hrabove, Donetsk region, eastern Ukraine, near the Russian border.

A grenade from Russian separatists accidentally hits the house of a peasant couple, whose wife is heavily pregnant. A regional drama is linked to a personal drama, and is of course the preparation of a much bigger drama, namely the accidental shooting of the MH 17 that crashes near the same house.

In wide, slow shots, Maryna Gorbach connects the world drama of the MH 17 with the personal drama of the farmer's couple. In the foreground the personal drama. In the background, in image and sound, the traces of the plane drama: the black plume of smoke, the sirens, the ambulances as small white dots on the horizon.

Beautifully portrayed in a cool way, this small and this very big story, just before the Russians will invade Ukraine. With today's knowledge you feel the impending drama coming...

As far as I'm concerned, the ending of the film is over the top, but perhaps necessary to keep a glimmer of hope alive, but that could have been more subtle.

I am used to films by Ukrainian directors, such as Loznitsa and Vasyanovych, showing in a raw way an almost post-apocalyptic world in the war zone - then only in the east of Ukraine - where fiction and reality are mixed in a postmodern way through a documentary-like style. intertwine, maximizing the shocking or desolate effect. This film by Gorbach also shows the war zone in 2014 “based on true events” and in a somewhat post-apocalyptic way, but purely as a drama about a couple whose wife is pregnant and the husband sees how MH17 is shot down and that doesn't work well: I understand that war is stressful, but the endless bickering between the man and the woman, later supplemented by the brother of the woman, that fills most of the film, is not very interesting. The tensions, of course, also reflect on a micro level the tensions in the war zone between the warring factions and how women give birth to life while men destroy lives.

For me, the film even balanced on the edge of being cringe-worthy in the sense that it dramatizes the war into a poorly staged play, in which it also doesn't help that what happens is always consciously a bit unclear so as not to give everything away immediately and to end it all. to a climax: towards the end the film finally comes to life with some action and it gets a bit exciting but it doesn't really save the film.

Very remarkable and unconventional war drama takes place in the Donbas in 2014 when the 'little green men' (Russian soldiers without a badge) have entered the country and flight MH-17 is shot down nearby. Although Irka [Oksana Cherkashyna] is heavily pregnant and the house where she lives with husband Tolik [Sergey Shadrin] and brothers Yaryk [Oleg Shcherbina] and Sanya [Oleg Shevchuk] is badly damaged, she refuses to flee. But staying means that they will have to keep the occupiers happy and that moral choice causes discord. Premiered six weeks before the Russian invasion of Ukraine at the Sundance Festival, where Er Gorbach won an award for her direction, and appeared in most European countries a month after that invasion. Intriguing story told at a thoughtful pace that maximizes the beautiful camerawork of Svyatoslav Bulakovskiy.
