L'Empire du Silence plot

The Democratic Republic of Congo has been torn apart for twenty-five years by a war largely ignored by the media and the international community. The number of victims runs into the hundreds of thousands, if not millions. The perpetrators of these crimes are innumerable: rebel movements, but also armies, those of Congo and neighboring countries. They all seem to be obsessed with power and money and think they can take Congo's riches with impunity and indifferently.

Dry documentary of a fascinating country (see the book Congo by David van Reybrouck) that just doesn't captivate, clever in itself. A lot of talking heads (I don't like) and a lot of information, but the focus is on points that are less interesting to me and the images are boring. I'd rather read a book. Few atmospheric images of the country too. 1.5*

Thierry Michel has been filming in the current Democratic Republic of Congo (formerly Zaire) for years and uses a wealth of often very shocking footage to explain in a detailed but clear manner why there is such a fierce and ruthless struggle for power here. The presence of valuable raw materials, genocide between Hutus and Tutsis (which has blown over from neighbouring Rwanda) and the unwillingness and inability of the UN to combat it are part of one of the greatest dark pages in modern world history. The conversations with dignitaries and the impressive eyewitness statements are crucial. A confronting must-see.
