"The Waltons" was a ratings hit for ten seasons, starting in 1971, and later also in the Netherlands. This episode in the life of a God-fearing yet down-to-earth American working-class family during the Great Depression is introduced by none other than Richard "John-Boy" Thomas, the series' lead actor. The Waltons are preparing for Christmas in 1933 and receive joyful news: father John [Ben Lawson] has been given the day off from work and is on his way home to celebrate Christmas with his family. Mother [Bellamy Young] asks John-Boy [Logan Shroyer] to keep four brothers and sisters in line, while she does everything she can to give John the warm welcome he deserves. But then they hear that a bus has gone off the road, resulting in a death! The cast's ethnic diversity suggests that times have changed in television, but Spiro skillfully prevents this from descending into sentimentality or self-parody. Food for thought for long-time fans and a welcome introduction for anyone who didn't consciously experience the 1980s (when the EO broadcast the series).
