El Gran Movimiento plot

The young, but weakened, miner Elder has marched with his cronies to the capital La Paz to denounce inequality and unemployment in Bolivia. Once there, the men again have to work hard to earn a meager wage: on the street market they drag sacks, furniture and watermelons. Elder's condition is slowly getting worse - according to his friends it's because of the dust from the mines he inhaled. Or is there more to it? An old shaman speaks of a storm that will destroy the cruel metropolis forever.

Despite the limited running time, it turned out to be a rather drawn-out, tedious film with long stylistic images that make the film feel like a kind of documentary. Watching someone climb a mountain or stairs from top to bottom gives you a few minutes of screen time, but also adds little if you do that too regularly.

When life outside the city is financially unsustainable - in this case in the mining industry - people move to the city as usual. Utopian and against my better judgement, but life there is not much better. There is no work for the taking and other problems invariably crop up. Whether it's the fault of the devil, science, or bitter social reality really matters little.

The film ripples along so slowly to the pace of our miner Elder's increasingly weak breathing. Both lack some energy and the agony seems endless.
