Fine.

Nice to see a slightly different main character, Japanese dramas usually revolve around either older people or school-going youth. You don't see a 40er who looks back on his life so far. Also nice that Mori knows how to add some extras.

That's how it all looks great. From the atmospheric locations, to the beautiful lighting and the clean camera work. The soundtrack is also just a bit more modern and the acting is of a very high level. The anti-chronological narration is the icing on the cake. Not so very original anymore, but within a pure drama it works slightly differently.

Heard quite a few people that this film cut into it quite well, personally I could agree with the main character, although I might look back on my past a bit more positively. In any case, some recognizable moments, but I have already passed the age of 40.

4.0* and a extensive review

Great movie, although I like the individual moments better than the overarching whole. Right towards the end, when the relationship with Kaori is central, I find the film a bit weaker. But otherwise a nice pace, visually attractive with especially very beautiful and sometimes pleasant lighting and a fine score underneath. Also very strong acting. The way of telling sometimes has added value, but sometimes it doesn't. Then you are just back in a scene and the film goes back a year and you have to start again. Partly because of this, the film mainly becomes a film of moments for me (and there are plenty of them), not of a film that grabs me completely. It is also not a film to watch back for me because the forty-year-old hardly comes into the picture himself. Although the ending with him is nice. 3.5*.
