When I read in a review that this was an old-fashioned film, the likes of which they don't make anymore, I already suspected that it might be something for me. That turned out to be true. It is an (often painful) romantic drama, set in a beautiful, rugged environment. The touching ending may be a bit exaggerated, but it left me with a good feeling. I genuinely enjoyed this, partly because of the beautiful acting and camera work.

A great story, based on true events, and a great film.
Sexual assault, war... A hundred years after this drama and still relevant, or what were you thinking?
The only downside: the ending is too corny.

In the village of Gearrannan, on the Isle of Lewis west of the Scottish mainland, 'The Road Dance' is a tradition where the residents meet each other and boys and girls find each other in love. This also applies to Kirsty [Hermione Corfield] and Murdo [Will Fletcher], who are finally able to get engaged in 1914 after that party. But before they can get married, all the young men are called up to fight on the western front. Kirsty's hopes for a happy ending are shattered when an unknown man rapes and impregnates her. Thanks to filming on location, Adams is able to convey both the sense of place and time excellently. Corfield is very good in the lead role, but the story is reminiscent of the corny melodramas they seemed to make all the time over 100 years ago.
