Zalava plot
"A demon in a bottle exists or does not exist"
In the year 1978, the villagers of Zalava claim that there is a demon in their midst. The young sergeant Massoud investigates this and encounters an exorcist. Massoud accuses him of fraud and puts the man in handcuffs, but the inhabitants are not pleased with that. Together with a doctor friend, Massoud gets stuck on the spot, surrounded by the villagers who see the demon in them.

Once an Iranian horror film, it's something different from the mere drama movie house I usually see from over there. Well, it's not really horror either, far from it, but it is mainly the atmosphere and the whole happening around it that generates a certain tension.
Possession, exorcism or pure collective superstition, the director maintains this thin dividing line throughout the film and that in itself is quite clever. We are working towards a climax that is inevitable. Tension builds and he alternates between the two beliefs. An emerging charlatan does his part and inspires the entire village and people are under the spell of a silly canning jar. And the scenes with the cat draw even more attention to this.
In addition to atmosphere, excellent acting and decor. Always nice to look around those small dusty streets and bric à brac houses.
