Tetê does not feel accepted, neither at school nor at home. When her unemployed parents have to move in with her grandparents in their home in Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro, the 16-year-old girl has to start over at a different school. She will try everything not to be bullied again, and maybe make friends and have a social life. But someone from her class has other ideas.

Real beauty comes from within. A nice thought that is probably true, but has little value in the real world. This youth-cum-family film revolves around nerds and misfits who have to compete against the more physically beautiful and popular specimens of the human race. It is remarkable that the wallflowers do not have any strikingly terrible flaws. Or actually, that's not remarkable at all, because ostentatious flaws are far too realistic and only prevent the transition from outside to inside from being wonderfully superficial and easy.
The main character Tetê is such an outsider. She wears large glasses and suffers from excessive sweating. Those are serious matters. Serious enough to be insecure and always left out of the group. She makes frantic efforts to connect with the popular population, together with the group of other nerds she befriends. And that's about it. The film has nothing more to offer. Very sympathetic and sweet, but so damn well-behaved and superficial. Humorless too.
There are no notable things going on in either the story or the character sketches. Well, except during the ending. Suddenly a number of ridiculous twists take place, which once again confirm how weak the film is and how uninteresting the characters in it are. .

The young cast members act very convincingly, but cannot disguise the fact that the scenario is rather simple. Almost all teenage clichés pass by very quickly and often barely add anything of added value, and the half-baked detective plot towards the finale is very random. Director Bruno Garotti follows the general expectations of the young audience fairly well, so expect a lot of sunshine, muscular bodies and singing. A kind of secret fantasy for first graders, but somewhat logical of course. The scenes that involve emotion feel genuine and the film is captivating with ease, but in the end it offers so little substantive innovation that you more or less immediately forget what happened after the end credits.
