Watched it today. A beautiful documentary, even if you aren't an F1 fan or a Schumacher fan. The documentary doesn't offer many surprises (for me as a fan), but it does provide an interesting and complete overview of the career of one of the greatest drivers of all time. A nice, compact biography in which many of the key players in his career have their say: Hakkinen, Hill, Coulthard, Jean Todt, Briatore, etc.

Weak.

And perhaps that is mainly because so many beautiful documentaries have already been made about F1 and its heroes. Senna, Rush, Williams, Grand Prix – I’m just throwing out a random list. All with a well-timed and compelling story that really draws you into the action. All with perfectly brilliantly beautiful archive footage that largely looks as if it was shot yesterday.

But Schumi has to make do with some grainy stuff and a story that speaks for itself. A sweet man at home, wonderful. But in racing, history is glossed over with giant strides, and in my opinion, that really does the man a disservice. The fact that the most dramatic moments in the film actually revolve around Senna speaks volumes about that. Champion for seven seasons, and with a whole lot of controversy to boot; surely there was more to tell about that—more than the one incident that is now primarily highlighted.

A pity, and after some reflection, what remains is mainly the memory of a somewhat lazily made film, the greatest substance of which is actually the words of wife and children. Not necessarily very interesting, if I may be perfectly honest.

My 11-year-old son follows F1 closely, but didn't know Schumacher. It was the ideal way to introduce him to one of the greatest F1 drivers ever and undoubtedly one of the greatest sports icons in German sports history.

I myself have never been a supporter of Schumacher. I always found him to come across as rather arrogant. This may have to do with his focus, drive for perfection, and his undeniable talent, among other things. However, his family man side also emerges in the documentary. Of course, you can never fully approach Schumi's career without mentioning the incidents with Hill and Villeneuve. Always on the edge, sometimes even over it. The duels with Häkkinen were fantastic, by the way, especially when you think back to Mika's overtaking maneuver with Zonta at Spa.

The footage from the karting world, featuring apparently already a certain Häkkinen in Kerpen back then, was a valuable addition, as were the interviews with his colleagues. The difficult start and the high pressure at Ferrari in the beginning are also clearly portrayed. My son enjoyed it, and so did I, actually. Great!
