Great.

Michael Bay may not be the most subtle director now making a career in Hollywood, but we can always expect many quality action films from him. At first, his films took me a while to get to, but these days I only see the highest quality on screen.

Ambulance is another really good movie from the guy. I've always found him better in films that are less concerned with the usual Hollywood vicissitudes. When Bay bets more on real spectacle without annoying humor, it all works much better. Ambulance unfortunately does not avoid some unusual elements, but is otherwise very strong.

Nice to see that it has been decided to use experienced Drone drivers. It makes for an almost unique action film, beautifully presented through clear, special and clever camera work. Suddenly you get very close to the action here, which is further enhanced by strong directing to communicate the tension in a very efficient way.

Acting is good. González in particular managed to surprise me very positively. The relationship between the three characters is never really well developed, but separately Bay knows how to make them work. The motivations are well emphasized, you actually have sympathy for them. As a result, after 30 minutes you are really in nicely built tension for the entire film.

The sad thing is that some character traits can't be avoided. I find opening a bag of chips during an intense chase so out of tune that it suddenly takes me out of the movie again. That's only short-lived criticism, because we also get a very stylishly directed action film with good tension. For a long duration of 136 minutes I was never bored. Nice cinema visit.

Director Michael Bay has one of his characters refer to the film The Rock (1996) in Ambulance. Besides perhaps some complacency, the reference is probably also based on self-mockery. The reference to The Rock only produces a reaction from the listener that refers to the nickname of Dwayne Johnson. The movie called The Rock is from too long ago for him. The short dialogue says something about the long duration of Bay's career as a director. Since the mid-1990s, Bay has been directing enjoyable action films with spectacular stunts, glowing action and thrilling chases.

All these elements are also reflected in Ambulance. Ambulance is a good old school action thriller with real stunts and handmade action. The film needs little start-up and quickly jumps into high gear after the start. And that's where the movie hangs. With things like elaborate character sketches and unimportant side plots, Bay has visibly little affinity. Only the bare essentials are told and beyond that only the action counts. Superb stunt work, violent explosions, exciting chases and penetrating aerial shots provide great entertainment.

As mentioned, the characters are fairly flat, but just deep enough developed to provide empathy. The dynamics between main characters Jake Gyllenhaal, Abdul-Mateen II and the beautiful Eiza González function well and add a pleasant extra portion of tumult to the tumultuous film.

Ambulance is just wonderful overwrought and unbelievable action. I had a good time.

It's been a long time since I've seen such a cinema hit! Of course there are clichés, but what matters is that you can fully enjoy a film, and this film has that. Basically what you can expect from Michael Bay. I thought it was a Miami Vice 3.0. In which you can even catch your breath. You should not miss this movie.
