Joe [Clayne Crawford] has left the end of the world cycle of Fox News with his wife [Jordana Brewster] and children for a secluded life in the woods. Despite his lack of experience, Joe decides to try his hand at game shooting on his own. During this expedition, Joe loses himself more and more in his fantasies and loses his grip on reality and on his own behavior. Benefits from an effective soundtrack that lets us share what's going on in Joe's head. Crawford impresses as long as he can be seen alone. As soon as Raymond-James appears on the scene as Lone Wolf, Machoian loses grip on atmosphere and pace and his screenplay no longer knows where to go.

I was very impressed by the director Machoian's previous film, The Killing of Two Lovers (2020), so I was looking forward to this successor. This film made less of an impression on me because the film is slow and little happens so that it tends to be boring (in terms of tension, the film mainly relies on a somewhat hallucinatory soundtrack), but because the film essentially focuses entirely on the one crucial situation, that situation will 'work' in you where you empathize with the main character with his hesitation and dismay with a strong and poignant ending. The film thus once again provides a penetrating psychological analysis of man trying to save himself from a precarious situation.

Reviewers also speak of a psychological study of “fractured masculinity”, but I think that does not do the film justice: the film is about a man who wants to take care of his family in a traditional or patriarchal way and fails miserably (that is the failing side of his “integrity” or authenticity as a (traditional) man), but the film is mainly about a crisis situation in which I think men and women do not react very differently (with an “integrity” solution in the end), although it would be interesting to see if women can recognize themselves just as easily in the behavior and emotions of the main character as I could as a man.
