Beyond the Waves plot

Taro Yamamoto is an atypical young Japanese senator who used to be a popular actor. The nuclear disaster in Fukushima marked a turning point in his life. Since then, he has waged a fierce fight against the Japanese government's nuclear energy policy. His story also gives us a picture of contemporary Japan. A country that is leaning more and more towards nationalism, xenophobia and rearmament. A subjective Japan seen through the eyes of a rebel who goes against the grain.

Japanese Senator Taro Yamamoto was an avid surfer and worked as an actor in films and television for 20 years. His background is one of the reasons why he is a standout in Japanese politics. The 2011 earthquake, which resulted in a tsunami and the resulting disaster at the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant, are crucial drivers for his frank criticism of the government led by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, and he uses his sense and experience of the theatrical to demand attention for his views. Entertaining and at times interesting, but a little more depth would certainly have been welcome.
