Impressive Belgian-Romanian production that, together with Un Monde (film, 2021), decided who was nominated from Belgium for the Oscars 2022. The film fabulously tells the story of the many (child) kidnappings by drug cartels. The ransom demand is the motive, but even following the orders does not always yield the desired results.

At the center is Cielo, a single from a divorced mother, who goes in search of her daughter and tries to find out exactly what happened. Eventually she seeks help from the police, but their indifference more masks their powerlessness, perhaps even fear of going against these ruling drug mafiosi.

The film is minimalist in the sense that no slow motion images or melodramatic dashes of music are needed to augment the dramatic scenes. It is precisely the silences that give the film the effect it aims for. The scenes in which the perpetrator(s) are confronted with the suffering of the victims are also confrontational. The arrogance and lack of insight is dripping from it.

Excellent role by Arcelia Ramirez in which anger is forced to make way for (desperation) hope and sadness or is it rather the other way around? The fact is that standing still means going backwards, here too ...

Kidnappings are the order of the day in Mexico. This film tells the story of a determined mother who, in the absence of interest from the authorities, goes in search of her missing daughter. A remarkable mainstream debut from director Teodora Mihai, thanks in part to a flawless performance by the experienced Arcelia Ramírez. The swagger of the young gangsters in the beginning of the film is appalling. I liked the final scene, though…?

The image of a terrified society weighed down by the power of crime cartels against which government and security agencies are unwilling or unable to do much.

The scene of the film is the one in which the mother, desperately searching for her daughter, has the opportunity to beg the kidnapper to give information about her child, and the latter actually laughs at her pitylessly, stoically and tauntingly. This one with the shopkeeper, who has also been taken away from her child, is still extorted daily, speaks volumes.

Something happens in our region, but this is of a different order.

Powerful performance by the lead actress Arcella Ramirez, who expressively portrays the many emotions she undergoes, in a well-directed drama.
