A fine Chinese film noir about a man who hits a man after a night out and commits a hit and run. A film that is told episodicly starts from prison. Ready as a fuse it seems, but Shipei Wen knits another fascinating subplot to it.

Wang feels remorse for his act and makes an excuse to contact the widow of the man who was hit by the car. What follows is an uncanny brooding atmosphere. This is further enhanced by shipei's strong visual play with shades of red, as if you imagine yourself in a world between dreams and reality. It is reminiscent of the works of Refn or Wong Kar-wai.

The film also takes a twist in which Wang is given the choice to set things right, but in whose interest? Shipei is very successful with his full-length debut. One to keep an eye on!

Cool genre work.

In terms of concept and story not so very original, although it is nice that there is quite a bit of jumping through time, so that there is still some mystery hidden in it. But it is mainly in terms of style that this film knows how to stand out. Visually very strong (and a bit more than the usual blue/purple neo-noir style), the soundtrack is also quite something.

Actors also on level, a bit surprising for the first film of a novice director, but if you look at the producers you notice that this is not just a small film. Doesn't last too long and the finale does not disappoint. Nice discovery, but Wen's latest is still a bit better.

4.0* and an extensive review
