Yes, this could be.

Lernous has already earned his stars in the theater, the bridge to film turned out not to be such a big step for him. Although you can still recognize his theater grounds a bit (everything takes place indoors, the rooms also look a bit like lavishly decorated sets), this has become a great cinematic project.

Visually well worth it, a great soundtrack, strange characters, crazy dialogues and a great setting. And every time Lernous' style starts to feel a bit familiar, something changes and the film takes a different direction.

It's been quiet for a while in Belgian / Flemish cinema, but this is another one that can count. Hopefully it will eventually find its audience, because the chance that it will be pushed away a bit seems real to me, but as far as I'm concerned, Lernous can just say goodbye to theater and become a full-time film director.

5.0* and a extensive review

Absurd print with a strong acting Tom Vermeir and Anneke Sluiters. In an increasingly surreal hotel, they are the only 2 characters, who are otherwise only surrounded by numerous absurd caricatures. The film starts interesting and in an absurd, but still (somewhat) realistic environment. The closed-hotel setting looks very good and the sound effects sounded cinema-worthy on my Creative set. The scene in which Sluiters makes her appearance in the film is strong, as is the part with Dave's aunt. Gradually the film becomes more and more surreal. Some of the surreal scenes, such as the party, are also well worth seeing. They look good and make optimal use of beautiful decors and light and sound effects.

It got a bit too much for me at the end. I found the denouement disappointing. Nice find, but no clue.

In the distance this film reminded me of Warmerdam's 'Borgman'.

All in all a nice trip for an evening.

3 to 3.5*

Anyway.

It might take a while, but after some extra searching, I tracked down the film tonight. Very handsome film, especially as a debut film, it is especially audiovisually much and much more than many other directors will ever achieve over an entire career. Has a clear feeling for image composition, camera work, decoration and use of color. Regarding the latter: It would have been cool if most yellow (not all, sometimes it is very effective, although they were mostly white) lamps were purple, would have given a nice twist to the mysterious dream / nightmare state in which the film is located .

The decoration of each shot is really on point. Enough to see (colors, strange objects). Also enough "strange" characters to keep it fresh, not very surprising, after all, it is a hotel. The clothing of the characters is also great, all cool / eccentric outfits that fit perfectly with the atmosphere of the film. Sound design also cool and at times disturbing. The earlier bits in the elevator reminded me a lot of Lapsed - Twilight. Furthermore, the editing is also very nice (especially those dream/nightmare bits)

Still doubting a bit between 4* and 4.5*, I feel the film could have turned over once (or two), I just missed that a bit. In addition the kiss with Nora (and the camera panning around them) could have lasted a little longer, a very nice shot that could have given the next scene some extra power.

Anyway, a wonderfully fresh and strange film that will certainly be on the agenda when the days are a bit darker.

For now 4 big stars.
