Splendid Isolation plot

Little is known about the disaster Anna and Hannah fled and the struggles they had to make to reach the remote island. When they find potable water and an abandoned house in the dunes, Anna reverts to her role as Hannah's caretaker. Distance is both necessity and torture for the two lovers. Hannah's fragile condition reminds the two women that their time together is coming to an end. One day Hannah sees someone on the beach. The bitter fate is upon us. The intruder is Death who followed the women to the island.

Cool house…hey would look good in a movie!

Thank you Jort.

We just don't have a story… it doesn't matter. We're going to speak English and then we'll improvise a bit, call it SF something after an apocalypse or something, it doesn't matter, they might fall for that...

So no… What a crap movie!

Camera work good, great music, but that can't compensate for the lack of a story...

Anna [Khadija El Kharraz Alami], Hannah [Anneke Sluiters] a drone, find themselves on a gloomy island for unspecified reasons. They bicker, cry at random times, play childish games and kiss through a piece of glass. Sluiters is allowed to take off several times and the soundtrack is full of arias that almost force you to plunge into a depression. Not necessary, without the music this would have been a depressing, pretentious work in every way.

Spot the puzzle.

Antoniak turns her idea into an exercise in omission, perhaps aided by the tight budget. That translates into a story that is left with almost nothing - and from anyone else that would have been wrong almost immediately, but because of the clear parallels with her previous films it somehow makes sense to me.

Nevertheless, there are still plenty of riddles left unanswered - what about the drone, what is the torture cellar for or is it supposed to represent an isolation cell. Why are they there, what happened to the other people, and how is it possible that Hannah's soaked coat is dry again in no time. And a whole series of such things that lie dangerously close to the inner edge of the 'pretentious tinkering' bubble in the Venn diagram.

Too bad about the soundtrack, it's really a bit too pushy for me. And although the accent of El Kharraz and Haring is usually quite good, what they say doesn't really match what a (cough) native speaker would say. That makes it feel like Dutch might have been better.

Furthermore, for me it is really a benefit of the doubt thing, but I understand all the criticism above. It may be mainly about the moment you see it.
