Discovered this film by chance and it turns out to be a surprisingly nice find! Unknown films are usually unknown for a relatively good reason, too bad, too cheap, too boring, all kinds of reasons. But sometimes you find a film that makes you think "Okay, this is really a gem". I have already watched many unknown films and discovered less than just a handful of gems, but Vide Noir is certainly one of them.

The plot description here gives a little more structure to the magically realistic story you see. The often tried combination of Refn and Lynch finally seems to work well here: Both audiovisually there is a lot to enjoy and the story remains deliberately vague, although with a little effort clarity can be found.

The first ten minutes will probably tell you enough: A somewhat incoherent montage of developments, before the protagonist looks into the camera and the opening credits begin. With a calm montage and wonderful ambient music you are immersed in a surreal haze. From that moment on I knew this film stood out above a lot of others. Because despite the obscurity and the budget, Vide Noir never feels cheap or amateurish.

The acting is more than excellent, lighting and camera work are better than many AAA productions, the story is easy to follow (in a deliberately difficult way): If this was an A24 production, I'm sure people would praise it. This film clearly deserves a wide audience.
