A young sex worker is looking for housing when she discovers she is pregnant. Her pimp would like to leave the prostitution world as soon as possible in order to take better care of his young family. An illegal Mexican seeks a safe place to sleep. In a shelter, he is attacked by an aggressive African-American fellow sufferer. An old Chinese woman urgently needs money to treat her sick husband. Stories set in modern-day East Oakland, California, near International Boulevard, infamously known as East 14th (E.14).
