Based on true events, the story of a Hungarian family who are placed under house arrest for several days in November 1951 because the Communist regime has reason to believe that one of the family members has important information about a political enemy of the state. The screenplay by András Vörös is an uneven mix of thriller, black comedy and family drama with an excess of characters and ambiguity. Well acted with a number of good moments, but too confusing to stick.

In socialist Hungary, "doorbell fear" was synonymous with the fear of opening your door and finding the secret service on your doorstep, possibly resulting in deportation or a show trial. This absurdist Drama / Thriller / Comedy film is based on such a true doorbell incident from 1951 at the Gál family. Because orders from headquarters are delayed, their apartment fills up with family members, acquaintances and curious onlookers who come to investigate, but are not allowed to leave by the state security agents.

Although the premise is of course gruesome and the situation is made even more uncomfortable because everyone has their own view of the event (the false suspicions are everywhere), "Captives" is never gloomy or dismal. This is partly due to the sober view of the case by Ilona Gál (Zsófia Szamosi) and Ernõ Gál (Ernõ Fekete), who do not give up, but react nonchalantly to every new guest who comes in and only worry about whether there is enough food in the house to fill all the hungry stomachs. And it helps that the secret police also have human traits.

"Captives" has a very strong script and the cast is very convincing. Too bad that not every character really adds value. Funniest scene: the onion, and most nail-biting scene: folding a hat and a boat from paper. Despite the fact that it never gets exciting and nothing really happens, it is an entertaining and captivating film about human nature.
