One day, when Lauren encounters the sniffing Amber, Lauren asks herself if she, as a crypto caretaker, would do well to keep the creatures hidden.

A decent animated film that combines the fairytale premise that mythical creatures (unicorns, mermaids, etc.) exist but are rare and hidden with experimentation with new weapons and the dream of utopias circa 1967, in the style of the underground comics of the time. It also combines this with the hope (dream) for the integration of people who look different into society. The film is thus somewhat reminiscent of The Shape of Water (Film, 2017) but doesn't reach that film's level.

A mythical animal that sucks up all the bad dreams at night, isn't that what we all need - isn't that why we get a friendly smiling teddy bear from our parents, that they want us to experience the peaceful sleep that they, we all, would love to experience but so often can't find?

Is that vague, 'new age,' 1960s, naive, do-gooder? Or are humans simply part of nature, and are all animals, seen or unseen, our family? Do the mice and the hedgehog living in my garden have a right to their place there, and am I morally obligated to support them as much as I can during the cold winter after I chased them out of my kitchen, even though I never actually see them anymore and so it's no longer about their entertainment value. Birds often get the benefit of the doubt with their cheerful colors, but the worms, beetles, and bats are just as much part of the secret commonwealth, largely working for our common good, while we never actually see or notice anything.

And the baku too. I think there must be one around here somewhere, because I sleep quite well—except for the persistent pain in my shoulder that prevents me from lying on my left side, or the constant noise from the supermarket construction across the street. But that's not the baku's domain. It's a sign that we need to help her keep her domain safe, and for ourselves too.
