While wandering through New York, Martin Scorsese engages in conversations with the ironic writer and storyteller Fran Lebowitz, while sharing her fascinating ideas with him. Lebowitz knows what she likes and what she doesn't like. She gives her opinion solicited and unsolicited. For decades the critic and essayist has expressed her opinion on all kinds of things, sometimes moody, but always elated; she's a New Yorker at heart. Lebowitz has elevated plain language to art. She packs her no-nonsense observations about the city and its inhabitants in a spicy commentary that spares no one. Pretend It's a City is a humorous city guide covering a range of topics, such as tourists, money, the subway, art, and a guide to walking Times Square. In passing, Lebowitz's own past is discussed, a life characterized by continuous curiosity and a desire for more and more independence.
