Mestari Cheng plot

After the death of his wife, professional chef Cheng travels with his young son to a remote village in Finland to reconnect with an old Finnish friend he once met in Shanghai. When he arrives, no one in the village seems to know his friend, but the local pub owner Sirkka offers him shelter, and in return Cheng helps her in the kitchen to surprise the locals with delicacies of Chinese cuisine. It takes some getting used to, but slowly his cooking brings the completely different cultures together and Cheng develops into a celebrated member of the community. Unfortunately, his tourist visa soon expires and it's up to Sirkka and the villagers to come up with a plan to let him stay.

The first minutes of the film gave more hope than what it ultimately became.

A romantic feel-good movie.

Gradually one sees it coming, it is perfectly predictable and without surprises.

Fancy a Chinese snack?

Sirkka [Anna-Maija Tuokko] owns a cafe in a small village in Lapland and is content with the modest life she leads. Then the Chinese Cheng [Pak Hon Chu] appears with his son Niu Niu [Lucas Hsuan] who is looking for a certain Fongtron. When a group of Chinese tourists visit the restaurant, Cheng uses his experience as a chef to help Sirkka (who normally only serves Finnish food) help out. Sirkka makes top sales and convinces Cheng to help her in exchange for shelter and help in the search for Fongtron. This creates a mix of Chinese and Finnish cuisine that is also popular with the local population. Gradually we discover the personal histories of both Sirkka and Cheng. The outcome is no surprise, but Tuokko and Hon Chu have nice chemistry. Kaurismäki turns it into a great commercial for Lapland and the local population. Vesa-Matti Loiri and Kari Väänänen are entertaining as the two old hands who teach Cheng certain facets of Finnish culture in this light, pleasant rom-com.

In fact a meager story, but the atmosphere with many beautifully shot images make it a successful feel-good movie.

I think this is the first time I've seen anything from Mika Kaurismäki, his style is quite different from his brother's.
