Werner Herzog Eats His Shoe plot

In the 1970s, young aspiring filmmaker Errol Morris ran into German director Werner Herzog. To motivate Morris to make a film by any means necessary, Herzog bet Morris that he would eat his shoe if Morris managed to get his film into theaters. Unfortunately (or fortunately) Morris succeeded in his aim, and Herzog is not one to backtrack on a given word. And so Werner Herzog literally ate his shoe live during the premiere performance of Errol Morris' debut Gates of Heaven (and promised to eat the second shoe when a major studio distributed it).

Herzog eats his shoe - and no, not a movie shoe for the occasion of drop, but a real one, a sturdy rubber-soled half-height leather shoe - the shoes he was wearing when he made the promise. According to an authentic recipe, with duck fat, a few garlic cloves, an onion and lots of chilli sauce. I doubt whether it is a healthy recipe, but apparently it did him no harm.

And as it turns out, it is not the only somewhat rash promise he has made, and in the meantime we are already half a lifetime further - who knows what other strange dishes he has had to eat in the meantime.

As documentaries go, it stays with the content, otherwise it is somewhat unremarkable. Seen as a preview of Burden of Dreams, I need a little more time to process what can be seen in it.
