Inexorable plot

After the overwhelming success of his debut novel, Marcel Bellmer has not been able to match that success. Years later and after a depression that completely knocked him out, he moves with his wife and daughter to the lavish estate of his recently deceased father-in-law. A young frail girl named Gloria is hired as a housewife. Gloria confuses Marcel to the depths of his soul. As soon as she moves into the building, Marcel revives. But as Gloria gets closer to him, Neville feels a terrible secret slowly coming to light.

Marcel Bellmer [Benoît Poelvoorde], the author of the bestseller 'Inexorable', retires with his publisher and wife Jeanne [Mélanie Doutey] and their daughter Lucie [Janaina Halloy] to a huge, remote country house. Then a sleazy, nervous-looking teenager with a vague excuse and an even vaguer past shows up and before you know it she moves in with the Bellmers, gets the housekeeper [Anaël Pike] fired and she has Lucie completely taken over. With extreme goodwill, you could say that the Bellmers were a little naive, but in fact they are a bunch of morons who should have known better and owe the misery they end up in a not inconsiderable part to their own gullibility. Despite some stylish scenes and a nerve-wracking musical score, the story is too crazy to get exciting and it completely spirals out of control in the last quarter.

Without being aware of the plot, and that might be a good thing, I started this film. Although it soon becomes clear where this ends, this was finally a good thriller. It's just a shame that some details were not worked out further. But in terms of acting, location and construction, this was quite pleasant to watch.
