Last year I spoke to Violetta Zironi after her concert at the Melkweg. Now she's a moviestar!

I had never heard of that island either. It does fit the spirit of the times. Didn't the radio station Veronica also start on a boat in international waters in the 1960s? In any case, it is interesting to see the fight against the government of Italy, with even the UN and the predecessor of the EU being involved.

It's all presented in a fresh film that looks good visually. The film's greatest strength is its eccentric protagonist, who thinks outside the box. These are often favorite people for me. The fact that he's a dry bastard certainly helps. Add to that a funny dialogue between a cardinal and the Italian Prime Minister about a "culo in the newspaper", and I get a good 3.5*.

An interesting history and in itself a warm nostalgic bath. But something about the pace of 'L'Incredibile Storia dell'Isola delle Rose' (2020) put me off. Almost like you're watching a production from decades ago. Dialogues that go on just a little longer than strictly necessary. The continuous focus on side characters that are meant to be funny. A predictable design in which clichés seem more important than character development. It doesn't feel deserved at all when Giorgio's sweetheart comes together with the other residents of Rose Island to save their new state from the Italian government. Between the lines, the film does raise interesting questions about the extent to which a person can and may detach themselves from their own citizenship. How free can a person be when he/she/them is always held back by their own nationality?
