Very nice surprise.

Everything looked like an average haunted object horror, and in broad terms it is, but Ridremont's direction ensures that it is just that little bit more. The horror sometimes crosses with very dark fantasy, and a dash of drama ensures that the balance occasionally shifts slightly.

However, the setup is what you expect. An advent calendar, 24 doors, and behind each door there is a certain something. The acting is decent, the soundtrack is good but familiar territory, fortunately visually it is above standard, even though the budget was not always there, I guess.

Anyone who doesn't like watching horror films will not be convinced by this film, and anyone who wants flat genre junk will not be fully catered for here either. Just a cool, nice and stylish film, with a very nice ending. Nice surprise.

4.0* and a extensive review

Eva [Eugénie Derouand], who is paralyzed in the lower limbs as a result of a car accident, receives an advent calendar from Germany from her friend Sophie [Honorine Magnier] for her birthday on December 3. There is also a written instruction that she must adhere to a few rules and that violation of those rules is fatal. Although Eva does not take it too seriously, she decides to stick to the rules and it soon seems that the calendar influences her life, but initially in an extremely positive way. But hey, this is a horror movie so of course it goes in the wrong direction in the long run. Ridremont doesn't keep you waiting long for the first moments of horror, but never loses the importance of a well-developed, interesting main character from on high. Derouand is excellent.

I came off as rather grumpy in my first post, which is why I decided to give Le Calendrier a review around Christmas time. The visual quality and grim atmosphere are immediately noticeable, making it clear that director Patrick Ridremont has more to say than the average horror conductor. He is undoubtedly assisted by an excellent Eugénie Derouand to fill things out completely. Even though I find the physical demonic threat to be rather stupidly designed in terms of design, the final concept remains strong. The film features a lot of creativity and unpredictability, making it highly recommended to watch during the Christmas holidays.
