The first of 7 Tom & Jerry short films to win an Oscar. Although that will largely also play a role in the topic in full wartime. And because of that subject it has been partly censored over the years. It is striking that the animation has more action than humor. This really seems to be a judgment on the war.
Not a bad animation, although there are certainly better ones from this duo. The difference with contemporaries of Tex Avery, Looney Tunes and Merry Melodies, is that Tom & Jerry is more consistent (including directors and composer have practically always remained the same) and hardly any dialogue, making the humor completely visual and in my opinion less dated.
