Maria Chapdelaine plot
The future of young Maria Chapdelaine could look very different depending on her choice between three suitors. Woodcutter François Paradis promises to marry her when he returns in the spring, while Lorenzo Surprenant promises her a beautiful life in an American city. But Maria does not always have to look far. Her neighbor is the humble farmer Eutrope Gagnon.

Beautiful pictures in this slow film, which examines the hard life in the northern part of Canada around 1910 for a pioneer who keeps moving. Actors deliver a good performance with beautiful non-verbal acting. The city versus "peasant life" is viewed with truths that provide convenience, but also with the stupidity of the city dweller. The impact of the Catholic Church is also dire. Things get philosophical at the end of the film, with Maria, well played by Sarah Montpetit, taking her place in her own way. Dreams and wishes were difficult to manifest back then. PLEASE NOTE The film lasts 150 minutes instead of 100 minutes!

A sensitively filmed account of a farming family in an undeveloped part of Québec in 1910. Rather conventional and slow, but the period and the atmosphere surrounding the harsh life are well captured. The story suffers, partly due to the long playing time, from a lack of tension. You have to like it a bit, it is in the corner of the regional novel.
The fact that the film is named after the eldest daughter is a bit of an exaggeration. It's not all about her.
