It took as many as six people to come up with this routine story about a gem with magical powers that disrupted the unity between the five different peoples of Kumandra. Raya [Kelly Marie Tran] is the young woman who seeks to unite the nations to fight against their common enemy. Nothing new under the sun and then there is also the formulaic comic relief in the form of a hyperkinetic (and very annoying) Awkwafina as Sisu. James Newton Howard certainly delivered a beautiful musical score, but you don't have to keep your eyes open for that.

Wanted to turn off the film after 5 minutes, don't like those plastic dolls with those ridiculously big eyes..
'Bratz' dolls, just looked it up, I'm not that familiar with dolls. Bloody irritating voices, especially that hyper-positive voice of the dragon, as if you're listening to an endless commercial of Kruidvat, Georgina Verbaan on acid.. Get the Prozac ready.
Raya: "When the world is in ruins, you can't trust anyone."
Dragon: "Or maybe the world is in ruins because you don't trust anyone."
They also discovered Rutger Bregman at Disney, it seems.
But gradually I got more into the story. The dragons, the crystals, the different clans.. with a dollop of Star Wars here and a dollop of Indiana Jones there.. There is a lot of speed, lots of colors and now and then there is more modern music than we are used to from Disney. Disney is increasingly looking for it outside the borders of the US, maybe we'll get our own Disney film here in the Netherlands one day: 'The Boy who put his finger in the dike', something like that.

Maybe I'm old-fashioned but not very long ago Disney made beautiful animation films like
beauty and the beast , alladin etc .
Nowadays it all seems to have been replaced by hip action without tension, modern witty chatter from the characters and of course the tough girl (or in this case girls even) because girl power is the new religion in Hollywood these days.
I have a hard time empathizing with these characters , they seem to be straight from 2021 in terms of behavior but they are walking around in a traditional classic world and that feels super fake .
There is also something strange about the animation , the landscapes are beautiful but the characters look weak and simply drawn with overly large eyes with no detail .
Too bad the story had quite a bit of potential but with this woke attitude in hollywood you don't have to expect much magic from Disney anymore.
