Director Vincente DiSanti makes a valiant attempt to revive the Friday the 13th series on a low budget, but comes off rather poorly. The structure of Never Hike Alone is more or less different from the original series, although it is clear that it takes most of its inspiration from the earlier installments. The first half hour is almost devoid of any tension and atmosphere, but fortunately Andrew Leighty gives a very good performance. Jason makes an appearance halfway through this relatively short film and from then on the film is alternately qualitative. DiSanti himself donned the mask of the iconic killer, but makes for a rather wooden Jason. The film regularly features a number of successful practical effects and the choice to play a large part in daylight is daring, but all in all the film lacks any atmosphere and an effective tension. The final finale is quite successful, but this is not a film that will stay with me for long.
